Every year swifts migrate to Cumbria, north- west England, from Liberia, south-west Africa, but in the last decade Gwyneth has seen fewer and fewer Swifts in the skies above Penrith. In her vision for the future the swifts have returned to Cumbria, symbol- ising the revival of nature as a whole..
From the ‘Postcards from Home’ project featured in The Great Imagining Newspaper
BA (Hons) Hand Embroidery degree students were tasked to create hand embroidered ‘Postcards from Home’. In the summer of 2022, each student transformed an upcycled embroidered baseball cap inspired by their home location. This work depicted a pivotal moment of their lives – moving away from home to embark on their degree study at the Royal School of Needlework.
The works represent each individual maker. Offering a chance to share their story with their peers, many chose to represent the places and spaces of their home, as depicted through stitch. Exhibited alongside each cap you will see each artist’s vision for a Greener, Fairer, Wiser future embroidered in a mini hoop. Each piece forms an embroidered ‘patch’, which was eventually attached to the caps. Each patch acts as a marker of a moment in time, which reflects not only the here and now but their vision for a greener, fairer, wiser future.
